  • The 2019 Open Evening

Inaugural Dinner 2nd March 2013

The evening started splendidly with a "Champagne" and canapé reception in the beautiful Academy Library.Everyone looked resplendent in their finery and the evening was off to a lively start. People met up with many old friends and the piper at the door could barely be heard above the chatter.
Joanna’s father said a few words and we then proceeded to the Assembly Hall, which had been transformed with flowers and sparkly lights. Music by Katrina and Peter was a perfect hors d'oeuvre to the meal. Neil Oliver was a masterful MC, no mean task keeping such vociferous and lively diners in check!

Two pupils from the Academy, Fergus McReadie and Charlie Stewart, played some sophisticated Jazz for us to end our meal, and then there was the first of two extraordinary speakers.

Wing Commander Pattle gave a highly amusing, if slightly worrying, talk on A Military Life, concentrating mainly on Graham’s “interesting” RAF career.

We then had the first Auction ably led by Rachael and her assistant and spotter for the evening David Borrowman. The many items that were donated to the auction and the raffle were truly amazing, and the Trust are indebted to our friends and family for their generosity . Thank you.

They ranged from sailing, shooting, fishing and stalking to holiday houses here and abroad, garden seats, golf, dinner and lunches at top Edinburgh and Crieff hotels, as well as a Michelin starred chef to cook in your home.

All items were "sold" to the highest bidder.

The second speaker, Professor Walter Nimmo was highly entertaining, giving us some wonderful anecdotes with a strong Scottish flavour, and then picked up his guitar and rounded off with two of his very amusing songs. Outstanding!

The evening ended with Tarneybackle playing some lively Scottish music, worth a listen to on their website.

The Trustees have been delighted by the outcome of the evening, around £18,000 will be lodged with the Trust, a truly outstanding result that beat all expectations.

A very big thank you to all who contributed to the success of the evening
